FaFuel Subsidy Removal and Exchange Rate Unification: Shettima Unveils Long-Term Strategy for Nigeria’s Economic Stability

Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized that the removal of fuel subsidies, unification of exchange rates, and strategic debt management are part of a comprehensive effort to restore Nigeria’s economic stability and foster long-term growth. Speaking at the 30th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES30) in Abuja, themed "Collaborative Action for Growth, Competitiveness, and Stability," Shettima highlighted the importance of economic diversification as a national priority.

He stressed that the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) plays a pivotal role in this transformative process. Under the current administration’s "Renewed Hope Agenda," Shettima outlined bold reforms aimed at creating an enabling environment for sustainable economic growth and widespread prosperity.

“Our focus is on sectors that drive inclusive and sustainable growth, including agriculture, manufacturing, and the digital economy,” he stated, underscoring the digital economy as a key pillar for revitalizing Nigeria’s financial landscape.

Citing data from a global financial consultancy, Shettima pointed out that by 2035, the global digital economy is expected to generate 65 million highly skilled professionals, positioning Nigeria to tap into this opportunity.

“We are making significant progress in addressing critical challenges, particularly in regulatory frameworks and improving the ease of doing business,” Shettima concluded, signaling optimism for Nigeria's economic future.

Libyan Football Federation Condemns Nigeria’s Withdrawal from 2025 AFCON Qualifier, Vows Legal Action

The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has expressed strong disapproval of Nigeria's decision to withdraw from the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, while announcing its intent to pursue legal action to protect its national team's interests.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles opted out of the match, originally set for Tuesday, October 15, citing safety concerns after being stranded for over 13 hours at Al Abaq Airport following an unplanned flight diversion on Sunday.

In a statement, the LFF criticized the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for a lack of cooperation and highlighted the challenges their team faced during the first leg of the encounter. "The Libyan Football Federation clarifies that its Nigerian counterpart did not cooperate with us in any way, regarding either the first or second leg match. It should be noted that the incidents beyond our control do not compare to the challenges the Libyan national team endured in the first leg," the statement read.

The LFF also extended an apology to Libyan football fans, explaining that the confusion and delays surrounding the match arrangements stemmed from the actions of the NFF.

"We apologise to Libyan football fans everywhere, as well as to all parties involved in the match arrangements, for the state of confusion caused by the Nigerian Football Federation, which led to the match not being held on time," the statement concluded.

The situation has sparked tensions between the two football federations, leaving the future of the scheduled qualifier uncertain.

Russia moves to label Jehovah's Witnesses as 'extremist organization'

The Russian justice ministry has moved to label Jehovah's Witnesses an 'extremist organization' following years of government suspicion toward the group.

The lawsuit filed with the Russia’s Supreme Court against the national headquarters of the country's Jehovah’s Witnesses wasn't dated and has not yet been scheduled for legal action, USA Today reported.
In response to the filing, the press office for the Russian branch of the religion released a statement Thursday saying it would represent 'dire consequences' for religious freedom in Russia if approved.
'Extremism is deeply alien to the Bible-based beliefs and morality of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Persecution of the faithful for peaceful anti-extremism legislation is built on frank fraud, incompetent individual 'experts' and, as a result, a miscarriage of justice,' the statement claimed.
According to the press office, the decision, if passed by the court, would directly affect about 175,000 followers at more than 2,000 congregations in the country.
However, it's not the first time Jehovah’s Witnesses have faced legal battles. In 2009, a court ruled a Russian-language version of the group’s publication The Watchtower an extremist publication and barred it. In 2015, a Russian court ruled the group’s website was also an extremist publication.
