Equatorial Guinea Government Dismisses National Financial Investigation Director Amid Leaked Scandal
In a dramatic turn of events, the government of Equatorial Guinea has dismissed Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), following the leak of explicit videos involving him in intimate encounters with several high-profile women.
The decision, announced by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, comes after the release of nearly 400 private videos that were shared widely across social media. These videos, which depicted Engonga with several VIP women, including some of his relatives, have ignited a national scandal, leading to significant public backlash.
According to Decree No. 118/2024, issued on November 4, Engonga was removed from office due to alleged misconduct during his tenure, as well as personal behavior deemed inappropriate and incompatible with his public position. The government cited the scandal as a breach of ethical conduct and professionalism, undermining his role as a public servant.
The videos, which quickly went viral, have sparked outrage both within the country and internationally. Among those condemning Engonga’s actions is First Lady Constancia Mangue Obiang, who expressed her deep frustration over the scandal. During a meeting with Prime Minister Manuel Osa Nsue, Mrs. Obiang emphasized the importance of safeguarding the dignity of Equatoguinean women.
A statement from the First Lady’s Press Office reads: "Her Excellency, Mrs. Constancia Mangue Obiang, has expressed her indignation over this event and inquired about the government's proposed strategy to address the issue. This scandal distorts and tarnishes the reputation of Guineo-Ecuadorian women, despite ongoing efforts to advance gender equality."
As the fallout from the scandal continues to unfold, the government faces pressure to take swift and decisive action to address the issue and restore public confidence. The dismissal of Engonga marks a significant moment in Equatorial Guinea’s ongoing efforts to address governance and uphold the integrity of its leadership
