President Buhari Should Declare His True Health Status – PDP, Others

President Muhammadu Buhari is sick, Nigerians are in the dark with regards to his state of health.

Before now, the Presidency had insisted that the President was not sick, saying he would only use the opportunity of his short vacation to undergo routine check-ups.

But a top government official has finally admitted that Buhari is sick.

He, however, added that Mr President is not terminally ill.

“The President is sick. But it will not be correct to say he is terminally ill. Illness has more to do with terminal disease. The President is only under the weather; he is not terminally ill,” he explained.

Before the announcement, however, arrangements were on to receive Buhari in Abuja, on Sunday, in preparation for his resumption on Monday.

Officials were put on the alert pending the confirmation from the Protocol Unit on the time the President would arrive.

The National Youth Council of Nigeria had also said it had mobilised 15,000 youths across the country to join in receiving Buhari at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

As of the time the statement on the extension was released, State House correspondents were on standby to join the delegation that would receive the President.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, had, penultimate week, in an interview with CNBC Africa, monitored in Abuja insisted that Buhari was not ill.

Adesina had insisted that Buhari was only in London for vacation and was not in any hospital.

He had said, “The President is in London on vacation. He is not in any hospital and he is not ill."

Surprisingly, on Sunday, the same Presidency announced that Buhari’s 10-day vacation to the UK had been extended due to medical tests and waiting for the results.

The PDP and other groups in the country have insisted that the Presidency should not play games on Nigerians with regards to Buhari's true health status. They say Nigerians deserve the truth.

BUSTED! Wine Factories Producing Fake Amarula, Others, Exposed By NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), arrested 9 suspects in connecting with "fake" wine and beverage manufacturing factories at Relief Market, Onitsha.

This followed a special raid and enforcement operation of Federal Government’s ban on imported fruit juices on Wednesday in Onitsha.

NAFDAC Head, Investigation and Enforcement, Kingsley Ejiofor, said those nabbed were involved in the bottling of unwholesome, counterfeit and dangerous drinks. His words:

“We came here for a special assignment to mop up all counterfeit and prohibited products which include imported fruit juices, food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, detergent and bottled water, among others.
“We were able to uncover illegal manufacturers of bottle, unwholesome and dangerous chemicals, they call wine and spirits. It was so disheartening.”

Mr. Ejiofor said that popular brands of beverages like Hennessey, 501, Johnny Walker, Red Label whisky, Best Marula fruit cream, Pure heaven, Amarula, Baron De Vals, Eva and J&W, among others were being faked.

According to him, the beverages were being produced in unhygienic factories with cockroaches.

He listed items found in the factories to include;
stoves, colourants, plastic containers, cups, labels, corks, unidentified chemicals and recycled bottles.

In one of the shops, the smell was so pungent that we could not even recover the materials and had to destroy them right there. This is why we find the incidences of cancer to be high in this country because we don’t know what we drink.

“I will like to use this medium to tell people to destroy cups, plastics or bottles after use because not doing so encourages these illegal producers,” Mr. Ejiofor said.

He further advised retailers and consumers to issue and collect receipts for every product purchased to enable tracking.

Ejiofor said the arrested suspects, five men and four ladies, would be interrogated and prosecuted. The recovered items, especially the chemicals would be taken to NAFDAC laboratory for analysis.

Update on Budget Padding: SSS, Police get Buhari’s Approval to Probe Dogara, Others

The police and Department of State Services have received the backing of President Buhari, to carry out full investigations into the secret N480bn budget padding in the House of Representatives.

The agencies had swung into action by scrutinising documents collected from Abdulmumin Jibrin, the former Chairman of the House of Reps Appropriation Committee, as part of the investigations into the budget padding saga.

A source in ABuja told us that the budget was also padded by Senate with Billion.

Investigations by Punch showed that Buhari, as part of his commitment to the anti-corruption war was favourably disposed to investigations into the allegations in spite of his closeness to the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara.

Jibrin, who visited DSS headquarters in Abuja on Friday, was said to have submitted written demand by four principal officers of the House during the vetting of the 2016 budget by National Assembly.

It was gathered that the lawmaker made copies of same documents available to the police detectives as investigation into the scam began last week.

Security agencies had started scrutinising the documents with a view to determining members of the House that would be quizzed.

It was gathered that the DSS, during the week, would start the investigation with the questioning of civil servants working in National Assembly Budget Office and that other affected principal officers would subsequently be invited.

Jibrin had in his petitions to the security agencies, accused Speaker Dogara, his deputy, Yusuf Lasun; the House Whip, Alhassan Doguwa, and the Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, of padding the budget.

It was gathered that security security officers were banking on using as evidence written demands by the principal officers to establish a criminal case against the House leadership.

Sources said Jibrin had submitted 'incontrovertible' evidence linking the four men to budget padding incident that embarrassed the Federal Government.

Among the documents, said to have been provided by the petitioner, was breakdown of the amount that was added to the budget which was alleged shared by Dogara and his cohorts.

In one of the demand notes, the speaker was to get N3bn; the deputy speaker, N2.55bn; House leader and chief whip, N1.8bn each; deputy leader and deputy chief whip, N1.5bn each; minority leader and minority whip, N1.4bn each; while the deputy minority leader and deputy minority whip would each get N1.3bn, totalling N17.5 bn.

Other evidence that may be used to establish a case against the house leadership include document on the N20bn projects allegedly inserted in the 2016 budget under the service wide vote.

It was also gathered that detectives were examining a document showing the 2,000 projects inserted into the budget by 10 standing committees chairmen which was approved by Dogara. The projects amounted to N284bn. The total amount of the budget padding was said to be N480bn.

The documented evidence in possession of the petitioner, according to Punch, would make it difficult for Dogara and others to escape prosecution for malfeasance unless a political solution was adopted.

Further findings indicated that Jibrin had received the full support of the President and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami in his quest to torpedo the house leadership.

It was learnt that Jibrin had met with Malami where he was assured of Federal Government’s support for his anti-corruption crusade in the National Assembly.

A top government officer, who confided in Punch, said, “Security agencies have received the backing of the President to probe the allegation. The President has said that there is no sacred cow in the fight against corruption. You know he is close to Dogara, but he will not stop the security agencies from investigating anybody.”

Some are asking, “Who are you avenging?” some calling us empty heads, ex-agitators have been condemning us on daily basis. Our criticizer from other part of the country, we do not have anything to tell you because you clearly do not know how life is in the region.

“To our criticizers from the region, we want you to know you are all cowards and afraid to stand for your people. To ex-agitators of the likes of Tompolo, We know why you people are after us. Our agitation is more civilized than yours, the Niger Delta Avengers is more concerned with people of Niger Delta unlike you (ex-agitations) that were into kidnapping, killing of Nigeria soldiers, sea piracy, vessel and tanker hijacking. However, we were able to carry out all our operations without killing a fly. We have sophisticated arms far better than what you use to have during your kidnapping days,” it said.

Update on Panama Papers: EFCC, Interpol to Go After Saraki, David Mark, Others

The Federal Government has opened a file on Nigerians whose names have been mentioned in the Panama Papers as operating secret offshore accounts in notorious tax havens.

Some of the individuals listed in the papers so far are the embattled Senate President, Bukola Saraki; and his predecessor, David Mark.

Others big names on the list include
Africa’s richest man, Mr. Aliko Dangote; his cousin, Saayu Dantata, and a former Minister of Defence, Lt.Gen Theophilus Danjuma (retd.)

It was learnt that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had been gathering reports from local and international media as well as the responses being given by those named.

It was also learnt that EFCC would carry out its independent investigation and could involve INTERPOL.

A German newspaper had last Sunday released the Panama Papers, seen as the biggest leak in the history of data journalism, publishing online 11.5 million documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, which showed how some prominent people across the world criminally hid money using anonymous shell corporations across the world.

The Panamanian law firm, regarded as one of the world’s most secretive companies, according to documents, has helped clients launder money, dodge sanctions and evade tax.

It was alleged that about four assets belonging to the Saraki family, which included Girol Properties Ltd., Sandon Development Limited, and Landfield International Developments Ltd., were tucked away in secret offshore territories.

Similarly, at least eight offshore companies in the British Virgin Island have been linked to Senator Mark which he allegedly operated while holding office, a criminal offence according to Nigerian laws.

A credible source told Punch that Federal Government was studying the mood of the international community and looking at how other countries were handling investigations.

The source, who pleaded anonymity due tothe sensitivity of the matter, said, “We are studying the matter closely. In fact, we have opened a file and all reports are being gathered.

“We want all the names to be released first before launching full investigations. The issue is a tricky one. After preliminary investigations, we will seek advice from the Office of the Attorney General because investigations of such nature will need foreign collaboration.”

US considers visa ban, financial sanctions against Alison-Madueke, others

According to a report by Wall Street Journal, the US is considering a visa ban and financial ban on Nigeria's former Petroleum Minister Alison-Madueke following alleged bribery, corruption and laundering money through British and U.S. banks. Read the report below
American officials have also considered a visa ban or financial sanctions against Mrs. Alison-Madueke and a dozen of her associates, oil officials and politicians, U.S. officials said. Washington is scrutinizing whether her associates laundered money in the U.S., the U.K. and other countries, the officials said.
Both the State Department and the U.K.’s National Crime Agency declined to comment on their investigations: “We continue to work with Nigeria to fight corruption,” a State Department official said.
Together, the litany of legal actions—conducted on three continents— point to a swift but uncertain precedent for Africa’s struggle against corruption.
“The real issue is the signaling effect: that holding public office in Nigeria should not be a license to plunder,” said Bismarck Rewane, managing director of Lagos research firm Financial Derivatives Co. “It’s working. The number of bribes I’m being asked for has dropped.”
For the better part of a decade, graft fighters in Africa, having lost faith in their own courts, have asked judges in Europe and America to wage their battles.

PDP Urges President Buhari To Overhaul DSS, Others

The main  opposition party, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came yesterday an advice that President Muhammadu Buhari should immediately overhaul the Directorate of State Services (DSS) to enable it function with maximum efficiency particularly in the face of the renewed attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents.

Acting National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, in a statement issued in Abuja said the DSS might have been too distracted by its alleged involvement in political issues. According to the party, the Abuja attacks by the Boko ‎Haram insurgents could have been averted if issues of intelligence gathering were taken more seriously.

The statement reads in part:
“Whereas we have remained steadfast in our commitment to support each and every policy adopted by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari aimed at ending terrorism, especially knowing the importance of secure environment in achieving peaceful co-existence, an imperative for development, and whereas we are aware that a bomb is an ill-wind that blows no good to anybody in the community, scaring away potential investors, we are therefore duty bound to draw attention to certain grave factors possibly leading to the unfortunate resurgence, which, if unchecked, could worsen the ugly situation.
“Our checks reveal that poor intelligence gathering by the Department of State Services (DSS) and other relevant intelligence group is largely, if not directly, responsible for the resurgence of terrorists, who have earlier been pushed to the precipices in the Sambisa Forest in Borno State, to the extent that they have slipped back into other cities, including the nation’s capital.
“From all indications, the DSS under the watch of the current Director- General, Alhaji Lawal Daura, does not seem to be in full grip of the intelligence situation. This is apparently traceable to the avoidable distractions occasioned by the flagrant use of the agency for political assignments since the emergence of the new director-general, in addition to the apparent administrative disharmony within the service, all resulting in the erosion of professionalism, harmony and loyalty among personnel.”
PDP alleged that “in the last few months, the DSS, instead of concentrating on its primary statutory duties of providing domestic intelligence, security service and criminal investigations for the state, has, under the new director-general, directed all its energies on political matters, chasing after opposition elements, interfering in election tribunal activities, intimidating and hounding tribunal witnesses, while terrorists resurge, and combatant security forces left with scanty intelligence.”
According to the PDP, the situation with the DSS has become so pathetic that it could not even effectively analyze reported suspicious tweets “predicting the attacks” as a cue to forestall last Friday’s attack in Abuja and other parts of the country.

GEJ on AIT this morning, speaks on Chibok girls, Interim govt, Jega, others

President Jonathan was a guest on AIT's current affairs programme, Kakaki this morning where he spoke on many issues including the Chibok girls, managing the insurgency over the years, purported plans to remove INEC Chairman Prof Attahiru Jega, the opposition, the stoning of his convoy in the North and how he wanted to come down from his vehicle and many other things. Read all that after the cut...

Reacting to the stoning of his convoy during his campaign rally in some states in the North, president Jonathan said some politicians have brainwashed young people who sometimes do not know their left from their right in carrying out such actions. He said he wanted to come down from his car when he saw that some of the people who were stoning his convoy were of 14, 15 and 16 years old who obviously did not know what they were doing.
"Of course people are worried about the issues of crises following the elections, security and the conduct of politicians especially politicians who employ young people who sometimes don't even know their left from their right because if you look at some of the people and the way they behave, you know that they are not even aware of what they are doing. For example, when my convoy was been stoned in some cities , I realized that some of them were little children who weren't even up to voting age. Some of them are 14, 15, 16. I wanted to come out of the car because they are children so you can see that some people are trying to brainwash the children" he said
Other things he said below...
