Xenophobic Attack : SERAP asks Jonathan to drag South Africa to African Commission over attacks on Nigerians

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the government of President Goodluck Jonathan to “urgently take legal action against the South African government before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights to seek effective remedies, including adequate compensation, for Nigerian victims of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.”
In a statement Monday by its Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, the organization said “Several Nigerians have been attacked and have lost more than 21 million Rand in the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa. This is unacceptable as it clearly violates the obligations of South Africa under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. These serious human rights abuses call for strong and decisive action from our government.”
“Both South Africa and Nigeria have ratified the African Charter. If President Goodluck Jonathan is to side with the victims and ensure that they receive adequate compensation he has to immediately instruct the Attorney General of the Federation Mohammed Adoke, SAN to urgently file an inter-state communication before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights,” the organization stated.
According to the organization, “there is no better time for President Jonathan to do this as the African Commission is meeting this week in Banjul, The Gambia for its 56th Ordinary Session. Articles 48 and 49 read together with Article 47 provide the legal basis for Nigeria to submit communication against South Africa for violations of the right to life and non-discrimination provisions of the Charter. Countries like Uganda have taken full advantage of this procedure in the past and there is absolutely no reason why Nigeria can’t do the same.”
The organization also said that, “By taking the proposed legal action against South Africa, the Jonathan government will be giving Nigerians in South Africa the best parting-gift ever while also sending a powerful message to the authorities there that Nigeria will no longer accept the inadequate response by South Africa to blatant attacks against our citizens.”
“The South African authorities have persistently failed to strongly speak out against xenophobic attacks, and to hold perpetrators accountable. This in turn has continued to amplify the negative impact and the feeling of fear and vulnerability of Nigerian community in South Africa. Such a failure to act also sends a message of impunity to those who commit such crimes. An expectation of impunity can contribute to an escalation of such attacks. And this is exactly why our government must act decisively to stop this trend,” the organization added.
According to the organization, “The proposed legal action will put pressure on South African authorities to hold responsible those who perpetrate violence against Nigerians, to adopt effective measures to end discrimination against non-nationals and to provide effective remedies, including adequate compensation and guarantee of non-repetition, to Nigerians affected.”
“South African authorities have the primary responsibility to protect individuals, including Nigerians resident in that country, from all types of violence and the duty to implement their international legal obligations to combat xenophobic and other forms of bias-motivated violence. The authorities need to be told in clear and unmistaken terms that tolerance and non-discrimination are important elements in the promotion of human rights and democratic values,” the organization also said.
“SERAP notes that the Durban Declaration and Program of Action (2001) called on States to carry out thorough investigations and to combat impunity in cases of racist or xenophobic violence. As part of the Durban Review Conference (2009), most U.N. Members States agreed in an Outcome Document that reaffirmed the responsibility of governments to respond to racist and xenophobic crimes.”

True Story of How Nigerian undergraduate was killed in Ghana over money

Godwin
On February 19th, the body of a Nigerian student studying in Ghana was found. (Read here). Godwin Awogbo (pictured above), a 300level student of Social Sciences at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana was killed by unknown person/s and his body dumped by the roadside. Now the full story is out. According to a report by Tribune, Godwin was killed over money. Read the full story below

February 20 was no doubt one of the saddest days for the family of Mr Fred Awogbo. Their son, 18-year-old Godwin Awogbo, was brutally killed. His body had been found with some his internal organs gorged out, with his hands and legs tied.
Godwin Awogbo’s lifeless body was reportedly found on the school campus. For days, everyone seemed to be clueless about what could have prompted such a brutal death. While the thoughts of Godwin being a cultist came to the minds of many, his friends, however, were quick to assert that Godwin was a cool-headed person with no such connection.

It would be recalled that Godwin Awogbo’s death made it the fourth Nigerian student to lose their life in the space of four months in Ghana. This has not only posed the question of how safe Nigerian students are in the Gold Coast, but it has also raised the question of how much university managements take an interest in the well-being of their foreign students, most of whom are teenagers.
The first death case was reported in October 2013 of a 15-year-old Nigerian, by the name of Master Austine Chukwuebuka Ogukwe, an SS3 student of Ideal College, Community 5, in Tema, who was reported dead under the watch of his house master amidst mysterious circumstance.

The second incident happened in November 2013, barely 26 days after the first death occurred. Two Nigerian students, Eddy and Charles of KNUSford University in Accra went for an excursion to the Volta region, under the guidance of school representative(s), but died when their canoe capsized.
Meeting with the father of the victim, Mr Fred Awogbo and some of his relatives at the Nigerian High Commission, emotions flowed freely.

Mr Awogbo’s eyes were swollen, obviously due to prolonged crying.  He expressed many regrets as regards why he had not listened to his late son’s proprietor who had suggested that he should send his son to Canada to further his studies or better still, allow his son to weather the storm of strike actions often associated with Nigerian universities than losing him in Ghana to the cold hands of death, where he thought he was safe and he would not lose him to strange culture.

Sharing how he got to know of his son’s death: “It was my wife that actually called. She received a call from the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana that our attention was needed. When I called the embassy, I was first told an incident happened in his school and my son was missing. I asked if there was a riot, they said ‘No’ and promised to get back to me.

“So that prompted my curiosity to find out through my contact in Ghana on what actually happened. I called the driver that I had handed over my boy to and I asked him if there was any problem in the school. He said he was not aware of any but promised to find out after sharing what I heard from the Nigerian High Commission’s staff. A few minutes after, he called back to confirm that there was a problem, but he refused to say what exactly happened. Rather, he asked me to come over to Ghana.
“I was still ruminating over what could have happened to my son when a doctor friend of mine from the northern part of Nigeria called and informed me that his wife told him of the news of my son’s death. That was how I got to know about it. So on Monday, I left for Accra. We arrived at the Nigerian High Commission and with some of the staff of the High Commission, we went to meet the Vice Chancellor. The meeting was also witnessed by the Police and all Nigerian community leaders in Ghana.”

The Confession
“At the meeting, the management asked some of his friends and roommate to say what they knew about his death. Meanwhile, while I was in Nigeria, I spoke with his roommate, a Ghanaian, who told me that my son had withdrawn some thousands of dollars meant for his school fees, but had lent the money to some students. When he requested them to pay back, they started threatening his life. It was after the threats that he heard about his death.

“Unfortunately, after everyone of them had spoken, not even the roommate mentioned the issue of those my son lent some money and how they threatened him. So, I told the school authority and the police right there to ask him to tell them how my son was threatened. It was when he started talking that we realised he (the room mate) was the one who borrowed about $4,500 from my son, thereby denying my son the opportunity of paying his school fees on time. When my late son started worrying him, he set him up. So, after the police took my statement, they promised to arrest him.”
Speaking on what kind of child his son was, he said, “My son was brought up in the church. When he was still in secondary school, he was being addressed as ‘Dr Pastor’ because he was active in church”. Appreciating the efforts of the Nigerian High Commission, Mr Awogbo said “The Nigeria High Commission in Ghana really surprised us with the amount of effort they have put into this case. They have promised to make sure the killer is brought to book.”

Mr Awogbo stressed his regret of sending his son to study in Ghana “Honestly, I regret sending my child to study in Ghana, because if he had gained admission into higher institution in Nigeria, this would not have happened. The reason I sent him to Ghana was to avoid the issue of strike action in Nigerian higher institutions. Even his mother and proprietor wanted him to go to Canada to further his studies. They really persuaded me but I said ‘No’, because I didn’t want to lose my boy.
“I have been traveling to Europe for more than 20 years and I know what happens in such developed countries. At a tender age, I thought if I sent him there, I might lose him; he might not even want to come back home.
“So I decided that after he’s through with his degree, he would go and do his Masters in Canada, but here we are.”

Advising parents who are yearning to send their children to Ghana to study, he said. “As for now, I cannot advise any Nigerian parent to send their children to study in Ghana; a lot of them studying here are teenagers and the stress is too much for them. Coming here myself has made me know that, in addition is the fact that the money we are paying is too much, compared to what private universities are charging in Nigeria.”

I Placed A Curse On My Ex-Boyfriend Who Messed Me Up, Now He Wants Me To Release Him!

Please, I really need some advice. This is about something that happened to me almost 10 years ago.

Read my story:
It all began in 2002 when I gained employment in an organisation. And, in the course of duty, I got very close to a guy named Mike. I later got to know we lived in the same area and since he had a car, he was always taking me home.
In 2003, we still shared the closeness and I was beginning to get fond of him. I lost one of my parents and he attended the funeral alongside most of my ogas. It was after the burial he told me he loved me and would want to have a relationship with me. I asked him if he was single and he said yes.
I visited his home one day and saw some greeting cards from a certain Nike and when I asked, he said she was his ex. I asked him why he didn't get rid of the cards and he said he just didn't think it was necessary.
On a Sunday morning, I intentionally visited his home cos I knew he would be in church. I interviewed two of his neighbours and they told me he was indeed single. They said he used to have a lady but it's been ages since they saw her and when they asked him, he said they've broken up. I was happy, thanked them and left.
We started a relationship in March and I was happy cos I already had feelings for him. After three months, he came to visit my mum and told her of his intentions to marry me. My mum said no wahala and gave him her blessings. I had already told her about him and she knew I was happy with him.
Imagine my surprise when I received a call from a woman in July and she said she wanted to speak with my guy. I asked who she was and she said she was his sister who just came in from Calabar. I was happy and told her I was yet to get to the office, but I will let him know once I arrive the office. I got to the office and excitedly told Mike his sister called me. He was surprised and asked to see the number. When he did, he said, but this is Nike's number (his ex). I said, really? I called the number again and she said I should give Mike the phone. I handed the phone to him and he shouted, why did you call this number?
I went to my cubicle and my phone rang again. Nike told me, don't think you have found a husband, Mike is my fiancee and in fact, I am 7 months pregnant for him. I felt as if my world would collapse. I couldn't concentrate and when it was time for us to go home, I told him what Nike said. He said it wasn't true and I told him, true or not, I am going to your house this night. He didn't want me to follow him home, but I was adamant.
We got to his house and I saw a heavily pregnant woman. Immediately he barged into his house, he started beating her. He beat her and rained blows on her tummy. I'm sure if that pregnancy wasn't heavy, she would have lost the pregnancy. After beating her, the woman pounced on me and tore my shirt to shreds. She started shouting, ha (Mike, I will destroy you).
She told me - You, you want to come and reap where you didn't sow? When he was living in a room, I was with him and now that he lives in a room and a parlour, I want to enjoy abi? In my mind I thought, so room and parlour na enjoyment shey?
After the drama, I couldn't go home that night cos it was too late. First thing in the morning, they started fighting again and I had to quietly leave for my house. I got home and my mum wondered why my shirt was torn. I lied to her cos I didn't want her to worry.
The third day after the incident, Nike stormed my office, shouting, where is that husband snatcher? Where is Dupe? Husband snatcher oshi? Ashawo, prostitute? Before I knew it, a crowd had gathered and they had to ask her what her problem was. She told them she was Mike's fiancee and I am dragging him with her.
My ogas had to tell her to go home and settle with her fiancee and stop disgracing herself in public.
Later in the day, they called Mike and me into the conference room and asked questions. Right before my eyes, Mike told my ogas I knew he had a fiancee and he told me and I insisted I wasn't bothered, that I would be the second wife. I didn't know when I started crying cos I never believed he could lie against me. He also told them I was always enticing him with gifts and money and that was why he decided to date me. I opened my mouth and couldn't utter a word. I just started crying. My ogas who were women shouted at me to stop crying and defend myself. I told my ogas I had nothing to say, but one thing I know is that even if it takes ten years, we are all going to sit down again and Mike would confess he lied against me. With that, I stood up and walked out of the room.
When I arrived home that night, I ate my dinner and when it was 12 midnight, I went outside the house, removed all my clothes, including my pants and bra. I looked up to God and cried. I said, God, you are the father of the fatherless. You know my story with this guy called Mike. You know what others don't know. If it is true I knew about Nike and still insisted on dating Mike, keep quiet about my issue, but if Mike lied against me, I want you to fight for me. I commit Mike, Nike and me into Your hands. With that, I went back inside the house, still crying.
Mike later resigned cos my male ogas were really on his case. They told him that if he could say I enticed him with gifts and money, then, he is not fit to be called a man. He had to resign when he could no longer bear the shame.
On the other hand, I am still with the organisation and that singular case endeared lots of my ogas to me. They really showed me lots of care. All these happened in 2003.
Fast forward to 2013, I received a call and it was from Mike. I was shocked and he told me he decided to call just to say hi. I was surprised to hear from him and I spoke with him warmly. 10 years is a long time to keep grudges I told myself. He asked for my BB pin and I gave him. Once in a while he says hi and I reply. I was surprised when in September last year, he pinged me and told me he needed to speak with me and it wasn't a phone thing.
I told him to meet me at an eatery near my house. He came and he wasn't really looking good. He said he came to ask for my forgiveness cos he lied against me and I told him, haba, 10 years and you think I would still carry your matter for head. I told him there was nothing to forgive. He now said I should bless him and that was when I told him to go back to the office and confess to those same ogas that he lied against me. He said he would never do that. I asked him, how is your wife? Does she know you are here? He said, no and I smiled. I told him, so you want to make amends and still want your wife and my ogas to think I am all you said I was. I laugh. I left him hanging and went home.
In October last year, I celebrated my birthday and one of my ogas, who works in a similar organisation as the one I work with, called to wish me a happy birthday. He said he would like to take me and my friends out for a drink or two at the weekend.
I agreed and during the weekend, he took us out. We were eating cat fish pepper soup when his phone rang. I heard him sigh and say, na wah o, what is this again?
When he dropped, he started a story about a certain Mike in his office. He said the man is so effective, but seems bad luck keeps following him. The name Mike caught my fancy and I asked for his surname. Lo and behold, it was the same Mike I dated. I was curious and asked him for more details. He said anytime anything good is about to happen to Mike, something happens and someone else is giving the goodies instead.
He said the latest one is the issue of a car he personally approved. He said the oga who is supposed to sign the final approval said he doesn't want Mike to have the car, instead he gave it to someone else who was lower in rank to Mike. He said lots of good things that have evaded Mike. I didn't tell him anything, I just kept quiet.
Last week, Mike sent me a mail and sent a text to my phone that I should check my mail. In the mail he said:
Dupe, continue to play God over my life. I know I made a mistake, why can't you just forgive me? Why must you insist I go back to that office and confess my mistakes? What's the big deal in forgiving me? We are fasting and praying in my church and one of the prophets that was invited told me to come and apologise to you and that you need to bless me to enable me move forward in life. Before this, I have been having dreams of someone asking me to come and beg you. Please, forgive me, but don't tell me to go back to that office. Let's bury the hatchet once and for all. I know you have challenges and I know you are still unmarried. What if this is because you have refused to bless me? Why don't you forgive and bless me and see if God won't turn your story around?
Now dear readers, this is where I need your advice. God knows I have forgiven Mike, but why can't he just go back to the office and tell my ogas he lied against me 10 years ago? What's the big deal in it? At the same time, I don't want to play God over anyone's life. Am I playing God by insisting he goes back to tell the truth?
Please, advise me. Thanks.

REVEALED: How President Jonathan Is A Part Of Oduah’s N255 Million Car Scandal

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has lambasted President Goodluck Jonathan over his handling of the N255 million car purchase scandal involving the minister of aviation, Stella Oduah.
The party said Mr Jonathan may become an accessory to corruption if he continues to shield the minister. The party’s spokesperson, Lai Mohammed, said the APC reached that conclusion after reviewing the evidence that have come out on the scandal and the actions so far taken by the president.
The party said the president’s decision to allow Mrs Oduah travel with him to Israel, while she faced investigations for ordering the purchase of two armoured cars at an inflated cost, was the clearest indication Mr Jonathan was never serious about fighting corruption.
The purchase was made by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, at the directive of Mrs Oduah, a House of Representatives investigation, confirmed Thursday. The purchase neither listed in the budget nor did it follow due process.

Mrs Oduah travelled with the president to Israel on pilgrimage last week, despite the House probe, and another investigation by a panel named by the president himself.
The presidential panel was “diversionary”, and Mr Jonathan’s plan hope is for a more severe event to overshadow the Oduah scandal, APC said, vowing not to allow the matter be swept under the carpet.
”No one believes the dummy that is being sold to the public, that the minister was denied access to the President in Israel,” the APC said in a statement Sunday.

“The egregious act of putting the minister on his entourage, at a time she is at the centre of a terrible scandal, calls to question the president’s sense of propriety and his commitment to the war against corruption.”
”This indecorous action of making a minister who is under investigation for monumental corruption and abuse of office one of the faces of Nigeria in a foreign land is an embarrassment to the country and its people, and a further dent on the poor image of the Jonathan Administration.”
The party “whole-heartedly” condemned Mr Jonathan’s handling of the scandal, and the particular decision to allow the minister on his entourage to Israel.
“We now understand why corruption has grown wings under the Jonathan Presidency, and why the Administration may well go down as the most corrupt in the country’s history,” APC said in a the statement signed by spokesperson, Lai Mohammed.
Mr Jonathan queried the embattled minister and she has since responded to the query, claiming to have adhered to law in the conducting the transaction.
The APC said the case was “straightforward” and should have summarily dealt with by the president.
“Instead, he has engaged himself in a rigmarole by setting up a diversionary administrative panel in what is now looking like an orchestrated ploy to buy time, hoping this issue will die down and the Minister will escape being sanctioned,” the party said.
”Unfortunately for Mr. President, Oduahgate is not just another scandal, but a referendum on his Administration’s fight against corruption, and on the legacy he intends to leave in this critical area.”
The opposition party also accused the Mr Jonathan of thumbing his nose at Nigerians, who expressed outrage at the action of the Minister, by approving for her to travel to Israel as part of his entourage.
APC said through his body language, the president was sending a signal to his ministers that it was right to be corrupt, wondering whether he was aware of the joke making the rounds that there were currently five Super Ministers in his cabinet whom he could neither sanction nor remove, irrespective of their actions, because they were the ones ferreting funds into his war chest for 2015.
“In other words, any of his ministers whom he perceives as key to his re-election can even loot Aso Rock and get away with it,” the party stressed.
”We do not know whether this is true or not, but we do know there is no smoke without fire, and that the seeming attempt to sweep Oduahgate under the carpet lends some credence to the joke.”
APC noted that because of the president’s waffling in dealing with what is a straightforward case of corruption, misguided people had now resorted to crowd hiring to protest against the growing calls for the minister to be sanctioned over the scandal – a very sad case since those being hired for such disgusting protests were the real victims of the mindless corruption that has permeated the land.
”These sponsored protests are just the beginning. Next, they will either engineer or hope that a spectacular violent attack, a la Boko Haram, will occur to take attention away from the scandal. They may also charge some out-of-luck folks to court over the scandal and then say they cannot act on the issue anymore because it is subjudice,” it said.
APC said, however, that the party as well as other concerned groups and citizens were closely following the developments on Oduahgate, and would not allow it to be swept under the carpet, “in the interest of the millions of Nigerians who have been consigned into the lowest rung of existence by a rapacious administration.”

Why I Didn't Take Over Power As Soon As Abacha Died –– Al-Mustapha Opens Up

A lot of political under-current went into the process that brought up Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar as Head of State following the controversial death in office of late Gen Sani Abachi.

But why didn't Abacha's dreaded CSO, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha used his overbearing influence to take over the government immediately, considering it would have been very easy for him?

The former Chief Security Officer to late Abacha said:
God used him to stabilise the country from the possible turmoil that could have followed Abacha’s death.

Al-Mustapha stated this when he visited the Leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Asari Dokubo, in his Abuja residence at the weekend.

He said he chose not to assume power during the death of Abacha, lamented that some people capitalised on his humility and loyalty to the service of Nigeria to punish him unjustly.

In his words: “Ours is to serve, preserve the country and so I did. If I had wanted, after the death of General Sanni Abacha, this country was to witness another thing. But in our character, ours is to serve the country and I did. Nobody fired one bullet the day General Abacha died. God gave me the courage. But there was so much confusion, so many agitations at that time.

“But God used me to stabilize a course and it is the course that gave birth to this democracy. So, if I had not done so that time, we would have changed the course of history. But because we kept quiet, we were humble and committed to the country, people now turned it around.”

His host, Alhajia Asari Dokubo urged Al-Mustapha to, “Forgive them. It is when you forgive that you gain more benefits from Allah."

Lil Kim's new look

The 37 year old rapper was photographed in LA recently with puffy facial features; puffy cheeks, altered lips, uneven brows, and a much smaller nose.

She's had a lot of work done on that face of hers over the years but the latest one has really altered her old look.

Plastic surgeons in LA say her new look is an example of surgery gone bad and are worried the singer has suffered some sort of muscle or nerve weakness due to her numerous cosmetic procedures. They said her lower lip on the left side is not working well.

Funny, Aki And Pawpaw As Ladies

Since the duo of Chinede Ikedieze and Osita Iheme popularly known as Akii and Pawpaw respectively broke into fame in early 2000 with the movie, Aki Na kwa, they have almost become inseparable.
