Alleged $3m Bribery Scandal: Video Shows Lawan Collecting $500,000 From Otedola

A Commissioner of Police, David Igbodo, yesterday, told an Abuja High Court sitting at Lugbe that the former Chairman of the then House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy probe, Mr. Farouk Lawan, was caught on video receiving $500, 000 from oil mogul, Mr. Femi Otedola, in 2012.

The witness, who is from the Special Investigation Unit in the office of Inspector General of Police, said the money was part of $3million bribe money the lawmaker demanded from the Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd, Otedola, as an inducement to remove the name of his company from the report of the House of Reps Ad-hoc Committee on Monitoring of fuel subsidy regime.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC, had alleged that Lawan demanded an aggregate sum of $3million with a view to ensuring that the company escaped prosecution even though the probe Committee had ab-initio found it culpable in fuel subsidy fraud.

Farouk was said to have pocketed the sum of $620, 000 as part payment for the illegal deal.

Testifying before Justice Angela Otaluka as the second prosecution witness yesterday, Igbado, told the court that Farouk was caught on video following a sting operation he said was set-up by the Department of State Services, DSS.
