Woman Steals Friend’s 3-day-old Baby In Edo State

There was an uneasy calm yesterday in Igueben local government area of Edo following the stealing of a three-day-old baby belonging to a middle age woman (name withheld) by another woman who is said to be her age-long friend.

The incident which occurred at about 3:30pm caused apprehension among residents in the community who rained curses on the said baby thief as youths angrily mobilised themselves in search of the fleeing suspect.

The suspect was said to have visited to felicitate with her friend on hearing the news that she was delivered of a bouncing baby boy. She was said to have assisted her friend with some domestic chores as guests trooped in to congratulate her without any inkling that her baby would be stolen by her best friend.

The mother of the baby was said to have left her baby with her friend to attend to other chores in the backyard only for her to return and discover that her friend had disappeared into thin air with her three-day-old baby.

She was said to have raised an alarm after searching the neighbourhood which led to a manhunt for the fleeing baby thief.

However, the fleeing suspect was later apprehended in faraway Irrua community of Edo central local government area and handed over to the police.

Unconfirmed report indicated that suspect’s action may not be unconnected with the loss of her own baby few days ago shortly after birth.

Edo state Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Steve Onwochei, when contacted said the command is yet to be briefed about the incident.
