FG Respond To Ebola Virus

The Federal Government on Thursday said it is taking all measures to contain the spread of the deadly Ebola virus in Nigeria.
The reaction was made known to NAN reporter in Abuja, by the country’s Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, in a reaction to the reported outbreak of the Virus in Lagos.
He said that government was scaling up public awareness on the dangers of the scourge to prevent citizens from contracting the disease, adding that government had already started purchasing kits for medical and health workers to protect them from the disease.
The health minister, however, called for collaboration between all stakeholders to clench the development.
Similarly, South-West governors also had a meeting on Wednesday in Lagos, on how to curb the deadly virus from causing more damage than it has already done. They also called for collaboration between the federal government and states to curtail a further spread of the virus in the country.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, who spoke on behalf of the other governors, described the virus as a threat, and stated that it is not only to the state but the whole country. He therefore called for collaboration, and coordination of efforts between the state and the federal government to manage the situation.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation which is currently in partnership with UN agency is currently undergoing a two-day emergency meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, to brainstorm on whether to declare the epidemic an international crisis or not. The organisation is yet to issued a global level restrictions on travel and trade regarding the outbreak which started in Guinea, spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and presently Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Ebola virus has claimed over 900 lives and infected more than 1,603 people across West Africa. Its symptoms include severe fever, unstoppable bleeding, which is easily transmitted through close contact with body fluids.
