Finding the best Eye Shadow for you
Everyone is always wondering which eye shadows go with their eye color. It feels like there's really no rhyme or reason, but we decided we'd take a stab at figuring it out by consulting a professional makeup artist. Face painting master Suzy Gerstein gave us some really great ideas.
For Brown Eyes
"For brown eyes, I use Chanel 83 Illusoire—a taupey purple. I love to use this color on Portlandia's Carrie Brownstein to make her dark eyes sparkle on camera."
Chanel Illusoire D'Ombre in 83, $36
"If you have dark eyes and prefer to wear neutrals, Shiseido Luminizing Satin Eyecolor in 810 Bullion (a shimmering copper that actually works on every eye color) is universally flattering."
For Green Eyes
"Plum, burgundy and reddish brown eyeshadows make green eyes sing! Try Chanel Illusion De' Ombre in 86 Ebloui."
Chanel Illusoire D'Ombre in 86 Ebloui, $25
"If you have green eyes and prefer a more neutral shadow palette, try Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in BR306 Leather—a genius, one-step cream-to-powder formula in a warm brown hue."
Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in Leather, $25
"Another neutral option for green eyes is Clinique's Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quad in Teddy Bear. The darkest, reddish-brown color in the palette really compliments emerald eyes. I have green eyes myself and also love to layer the two. I start with a sheer application of BR309 and top that with the deepest color from the Teddy Bear quad to add depth and dimension."
Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quad in Teddy Bear, $25.50
For Blue Eyes
"I love the way warm, orangey copper-based shades offset blue eyes. My top pick is Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in OR313 Sunshower. I recommend lightly buffing the color onto your whole eyelid from lash line to just above crease, with either your finger or a big, fluffy eyeshadow brush. With colors as bold as these, always work gradually in thin layers. I think it's chicest to have an almost translucent wash of color. Blend with a clean finger or dry, clean brush so that any edges disappear and all you are left with is a soft cloud of color."
Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in Sunshower, $25
"My second pick for blue eyes might be unconventional, but I love using lip gloss for an easy, one-step eye with sheen to it—it really picks up the light. My new (all-natural) pick is Neal's Yard Remedy English Rose Lipgloss in Fig, a gorgeous glimmering copper that really electrifies blue eyes. Neal's Yard Remedy is the first cosmetics company certified organic by the Soil Association and it is finally available here in the US, which I am very excited about!"
